American Solar Challenge Finish Line
Herrett Center, College of Southern Idaho
Finish Line Activities: 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM
Racers, charge your solar-powered vehicles! A collegiate car race is officially set to (quietly) roar into town. The Herrett Center for Arts & Science is pleased to announce partnership with the American Solar Challenge and the Innovators Educational Foundation to host the official finish line to the 2022 American Solar Challenge. The road race is a cross-country, solar-powered vehicle competition featuring multiple collegiate teams from across the United States and Canada.
The teams from each college build functioning, solar-powered vehicles which they put through a series of inspections and qualifying events before vying cross country against one another with daily stops along the route. This year’s race will start in Independence, Missouri, on July 9th and follow the path of the Oregon Trail all the way to the finish line in Twin Falls, Idaho, on July 16th. In fact, the official finish line is slated to be at the end of the front walkway to the Herrett Center.
Herrett Center Director Joey Heck says, “The finish line location is big deal. The teams finish the week-long race in a culmination of months of design, build, and qualifying trials, and celebrate the successful completion of the competition at a photo-friendly finish line featuring checkered flags, black and white stripes, pomp, fanfare, and general racing pageantry.”
As cars finish the race, teams will park their solar-powered vehicles for public display in the parking lot adjacent to the center. Teams are expected to finish throughout the day, starting at approximately 11:30 AM and continuing until 3:00 PM, or as late as necessary. The Herrett Center will offer planetarium shows that afternoon, solar observing on the front walkway, as well as community partner displays and activities.
The public is invited to attend the event, with on-site activities scheduled from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM
The Herrett Center for Arts and Science is located on the northeast side of the College of Southern Idaho main campus in Twin Falls, Idaho.
